Kathy Langevin, MD
MD: Chicago Medical School
RESIDENCY (Dermatology): UCLA and University of Iowa
BOARD-CERTIFIED: The American Board of Dermatology
It’s not surprising that parents say Dr. Langevin’s ability to understand and respond to their concerns for their children is remarkable: She has two young daughters of her own at home. Equally impressive, they say, are her bedside manner and the follow-up care she provides.
The daughter and granddaughter of pediatricians, Dr. Langevin realized she had found the perfect career fit – helping children with their skin problems — while working a dermatology rotation as part of her pediatrics residency. She became board-certified in three areas – dermatology, pediatrics and pediatric dermatology.
“I try to be very honest and give parents advice and a treatment plan they can follow,” she says. “Setting reasonable expectations is important because many times, patients are looking for a quick fix. The reality, though, is that many pediatric skin conditions are chronic. For example, eczema, warts and acne are conditions that can persist for years, so it’s important to make sure parents are prepared for that”.
“My goal is to educate parents on how their child’s treatment plan will work and why it is important,” she adds. “If parents have an understanding of what we are doing and why, they’ll be better prepared to take an active role in caring for their child’s skin condition going forward.”
